I'll be the first to tell you that following a program is vital to success. I'll also be the one to tell you that it took me years to figure this out. Not that I didn't know the importance of a program but merely I felt doing what made me feel good was best. Don't get me wrong, I equally emphasize doing what makes you feel good, as keeping things interesting and enjoyable should be the foundation of fitness.
However, for those inclined to seeing sound results from a training program is essential. Investing in a professionally designed program allows for insight in which the majority of gym goers don't possess. This insight, though general knowledge to the greater Personal Trainer community, is a piece of intellectual property in part very similar to that of your high school english teacher's. Though you can speak and read english it doesn't mean you automatically know all there is about the english language in its spoken and written form. Of course not! You learn from your english teacher just as you would learn from a personal trainer or strength coach.
Buying into a professional program allows for proper exercise sequencing, appropriate allocation of exercises in response to your personal metrics and goals. and a division of time (Meso and microcycles) that best suits progression. Building a working relationship with a personal trainer or strength coach allows for an outside view on your personal goals. Regardless of experience, an alternate opinion can very often be the difference between success and failure.
Investing in a program is the surefire way of reaching your goals in the most effective manor regardless of training tenure and knowledge. Putting forth potentially a few hundred dollars to lock in your success seems like a worthy investment, take the leap and do what's best for your.
