When To Take It Easy?

Never thought i'd be sitting down to write this post, but here I am. If you've read a handful of my posts before you know I set out on a journey to complete 365 days of fitness. Well today marks day 478 and though I thought the day would never come, i've crossed the finish line, not at my own accord but for my own wellbeing. For the past week or so i've been noticing a decline in motivation, lack of energy, bad sleeping patterns, and sub par recovery to say the least. Granted it's been a tough year working some 60-80 hours any given week whilst training 10-14 hours on top of that, coaching 2-4 hours a day, and weekends haven't been a thing in quite some time. Now i'm certainly not looking for sympathy, just speaking to those who are living the same reality.

It's easy to get in that mental dog fight and try to get after whatever goal you've set for yourself everyday. This very thing has become my addiction, chasing the opportunity to grow and be better each day. Eventually however, the road can run wary, and you're left with little to walk on. I don't dare bring up overtraining, but I will say that without giving into my ego and lust for doing it all, I feel i'd be stepping into the world of injuries sometime soon. Effectively ending my progress altogether.

When you fight day in and day out for every inch of what you love it's enticing to do more, but what builds strength even more then adding one more pound, or working one extra hour, is looking yourself in the eye and telling yourself it's enough, time to take a break, relax.

Beating yourself to a pulp and hoping for more is quite literally insanity. I mean the definition is 'doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".

Sometimes taking the foot off the gas pedal is just what you need to break through a plateau, re-invigorate your system, and start enjoying training/life again.

It may be a lesson i've told clients and friends time and time again, but knowledge is never known until put into practice on your own.

From me to you, when you're down in the dumps, lacking focus, energy, and motivation, it's time to take it easy, relax, and get back to baseline!
