"You can do it!"
We've all heard it, from Rob Schneider in...well every Adam Sandler movie it seems :), to mom cheering you on at a soccer game when you were three.
It becomes tantalizing almost. "Yah yah I know" roll of the eyes, and carry on.
But it is true, you CAN do it!
I mean that from a supportive role but mostly from a scientific position.
Physiologically you can do it. The greater proportion of the time when we feel "fatigued" or "weak" is not necessarily because we are but because we perceive it as such.
Don't get me wrong there are those who have a low tolerance as a result of age, training tenure, and emotional instability. But for the purpose of this blog post, let's put everyone on a somewhat even playing field.
For the large majority of us we all have the assets available to perform basal metabolic conditioning whether it be lifting, running, or playing a sport.
It is however, up to our minds to a greater extent to determine the duration in which we perform these actions.
Famous Seal member and all around badass David Goggins is known for his 40% rule. The idea that we more often then not giving up at 40% fatigue, 40% sense of discomfort, 40% feeling of doubt. That we are missing out on 60% of our potential.
From a biological standpoint this is rather accurate. Our bodies set up barriers based on perceived exertion and furthermore, our conditioned state to these barriers amplify our rate of perceived exertion. All to say that if we put off exercise, or restrict the intensity of the exercise bouts we endure to that of a lower degree for years then we become accustomed to this level of fitness.
The only true way to initiate physiological change is to overload and progressively push our system above what it is used to and comfortable with to illicit change.
Yes consistent aerobic walking/jogging 30mins/day 3-5day a week will help your cardiorespiratory fitness, but it ultimately won't make you fit nor will it drastically help you with weight loss.
Pushing yourself passed that 40% into the 60% is what will drive the change you are looking for.
So when I say you can do it, don't think of those false praises from loved ones at little league, think of the 60% you're missing out on.
Enjoy!
