With today's online resources and the astounding number of personal trainers and online coaches available to you at the press of the button, finding a program that suits you takes but a few minutes of work.
Here's 5 steps on how to find the program that best suits you!
Step 1: Determine your goal
You don't walk in a grocery store without at least a rough idea of what you're there to buy. Most times you've brought a check list along with you. So before you start digging through Men's Physique and Vogue articles for a free program put down on paper your checklist. What is your goal? Weight loss? Muscle gain? Maintain sound physical shape?
Jot down your goal and be precise. Then fill out some bullet points of mini goals you can hit every week. Having a set goal will let you narrow down on where to look and what key words stand out.
Step 2: What do you have available to you?
No sense in getting Calum von Moger's 8 week muscle building guide if all you have is a set of dumbbells and some elastic bands your aunt got you for Christmas the first time you tried getting into fitness. Like your goals, jot down what you have available to you. This will allow you to further isolate what it is you need.
Step 3: Understand your limitations
This goes above what you have available to you. Understand your current physical limitations. Are you in shape and looking to push yourself? Out of shape and need low impact workouts? Are you de-trained (used to be in good shape) and just need to find your groove again?
All these factors come into play when designing / finding a program. We all want to be able to purchase the Advanced lifting E-Book, but it simply isn't the case. So be true to yourself, know your level and limitations, and find what best suits you.
Step 4: Stay consistent
There is no progress without consistency and i'm not just saying that because it's my modo. Consistency is the key to making fitness gains. So find a program that nails the above criteria and is something you want to do everyday, something you enjoy, and can consistently perform start to finish day in and day out.
If you don't like what you're doing, find something else.
Step 5: If all else fails, just move!
Too many people get caught up with trying to find the perfect program. Stressing over the little details. Just move. The best program is you getting up and doing something. Go for a jog, run, walk, jumping jacks, pushups. All things are possible and free when you have a bit of space and blood pumping through your veins. The best program is always the one that gets you moving and grooving.
I know some of you will be like "well this doesn't tell me how to build a program!", well just like your grocery cart in Super C, I can't fill your basket, you've gotta figure that out yourself. Perform each step above and you'll land on the right program, no doubt in my mind.
If searching is not something you're interested in, I am more than happy to build a program for you, just shoot me a message and we can chat :)
