How to be disciplined???

Last night I had a player of mine ask me a really good question..."How do I be disciplined?"

A lot of people want to get up every morning at the crack of dawn, tackle tough tasks, and have the durability to face any adversity. But how in the world do you go about it? Do you build it? Forge it? Is it a natural gift? Learn it??????

Topics inquired about: Getting up early, getting in workouts alone, and general discipline principles.

Well let's just say it's simpler then you think ahah, but here's my response...

"Routine and habits. We often get discipline mixed with being tough and being ultra resilient. That's not the case, though they often go hand in hand. If you visualize and truly understand your end goal then it makes the tough times especially easier to manage. So take 5-10 mins to think and write down a very precise goal. Make it to NHL is not specific. But, adhere to training programs, wake up early 5/7 days a week, or learn something new everyday are relatively small attainable goals that can be met and help build towards the final greater goal.

Once you have a set short term goal and purpose you'll have a better chance of sticking to it. It's true when people say live in the moment...it's all that you can control.

So on to habits and routine. These are the two pillars of discipline. It goes without saying that all successful people possess these two qualities.

You have to build a routine so that it becomes a habit. If we take getting up early as an example, in order for something to become a routine we need to set clear boundaries. The goal shouldn't be getting up at exactly 6am. Rather getting up before 7. This means you can have a buffer. After 30 days or so the body's internal clock will then be accustomed and getting up at that time will become automatic. After 90 days the routine of getting up before 7 becomes a habit in a truly physical way, literally drilled into your biology.

This same principle goes for all goals and aspirations.

Working out alone..set the goal of 4-5 solo workouts that last 20-30mins a week. 30 days, habit is solidified. 90 days it's become a habit. Through time the workouts will become longer, they'll translate into the gym, and you'll build a better understanding of your body, mind, and soul.

It's also important to reiterate mindset. Don't over complicate it. You don't have to be some chiseled badass to have a badass mindset. That comes from having clear intentions and knowing your purpose.

It's rather specific and vague at the same time. Just know the importance of understanding your personal goals and intentions. Setting routines and building habits.

That my friend is the key to discipline."

The toughest questions require the simplest responses. In the light of discipline, you set the standards and the outcome is based on your control of the present. Worry not of the future or past, relax and live in the moment , for that 's all you have at any given time.
