Experience is the best teacher

9 times out of 10 when people become a client of mine it's because they lack the knowledge and comfort in a gym setting. Though their goals may be the root cause for them getting in touch with me, it is their underlying need of specialized knowledge that clicks send on that email. For the other 10% it is the specificity of an outsider looking in that aids them in reaching their goals. Same principle but different approach. However! There are more folks un-able or un-interested in paying for a personal coach. It can be expensive and you don't want to pay someone if you aren't totally sure what they can offer you. So...here's my recommendation to those un-sure of how to approach tackling your fitness goals.
MOVE!
Just move. Get out there and do something. People over complicate things far too often. If everyone knew how simple it is to reach your fitness goals there'd be far less PTs. Not helping myself out here, but the information is crucial. The only caveat is that regardless of simplicity, it always requires hard work. So given you are willing to work hard the rest is easy.
If you've read my E-Book on weight-loss, Nutrition Guide, or my blog post on energy balance then you should know that to lose weight you must burn more then you consume = caloric deficit, to gain you must be in surplus, consume> burn, and to maintain you must be in an energy balance, consume = burn.
How you go about it doesn't really matter. Unless you are a competitive athlete needing an advantage over your opponents, the need for highly specified training is very minimal. Simply do enough of whatever you like to put yourself in the right energy balance and you will reach your goals, it is that simple.
Now the question asked would be "that's simple enough to say but what kind of exercises do I do at the gym?"
This is where experience comes in. Arnold and those golden era bodybuilders didn't have step-by-step guides. They created their own by experimenting. Especially with today's vast array of online resources, there is limitless opportunities to gain information. Look up 'gym exercises' on google, click on the first page, and try those. It's truly that simple.
Build your repertoire of exercises, become comfortable using different machines, and gather information through trial and error.
Experience is the best teacher and it has proven to be so time and time again.
So....how do I lose weight? ....Get out and move!
But....how do I gain muscle? ..... Lift a bunch of different weights, in different planes of motion.
Ok but.....how do I maintain weight? ,....keep moving, keep lifting, and just don't over eat. Losing weight still? Eat more! Gaining weight? Eat a little less.
Your goals are as easy to achieve as they are to come up with, it comes down to you and your willingness to experiment.
